At Goodison Park, Ashley Young and his son Tyler made sure to enjoy the moments leading up to and following Everton’s FA Cup matchup with Peterborough.
Beto and Iliman Ndiaye’s goals were sufficient to give the Toffees a 2-0 victory over the League One team in Thursday night’s third round of the renowned competition.
Ashley, a 39-year-old Everton player, faced Tyler, an 18-year-old who plays for Peterborough, in a match that attracted a lot of attention.
In his illustrious career, Ashley has played 739 games for teams including Watford, Aston Villa, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Everton.
Ashley Young has played 32 games for the Toffees and won the FA Cup with United in 2015–16. He currently plays frequently for the team.
In the 154 years of the tournament, no father and son had ever faced off against one another, thus the Youngs were expecting to create history.
However, Ashley and Tyler had a heartfelt conversation at their pre-game meeting on the Goodison Park field prior to kickoff.
In the endearing interaction, both Youngs were seen grinning as they emerged from the tunnel together, pausing for a chat.
The two replacements then warmed up on the touchline as the game started.
Tyler was spotted smiling as he took in the moment as they passed one another during their stretches.
Tyler’s introduction was anticipated, but the idea of a Young reunion on the pitch never came to pass, even though Ashley replaced Nathan Patterson at the 73-minute mark.
Nevertheless, the 39-year-old made sure to give his kid another heartfelt embrace after the game.
He was heard speaking to Tyler for a few seconds as the two Youngs appeared rather devastated by the result. They then clapped the remaining Goodison Park supporters and departed the pitch together.
Tyler is unquestionably a youngster, having made just one professional appearance—coming off the bench in an EFL Trophy match against Stevenage in October—while Ashley is a renowned veteran.
Prior to being chosen on the bench for the match against Everton, he had not been included in the matchday squad for any of Peterborough’s previous 14 games.
Before moving to the Posh in the summer, the 18-year-old spent his early years with QPR’s academy setup.
The possibility of the Youngs facing each other was hinted at by Peterborough manager Ferguson in a pregame speech.
He acknowledged on Wednesday that Tyler would be on the bench, but he couldn’t promise he would play. That, in my opinion, will depend on how the game plays out.
He’s a gifted youngster. His father, who continues to play at over forty, is the best role model he could have. You must work at it every day to achieve that. My young players can learn a lot from it.
The 39-year-old described what it would mean if Ashley and Tyler were to walk onto the pitch together in an interview that was broadcast on talkSPORT this week.
